Privacy Policy
Effective 15 October 2026
Xcerpt keeps the passages you mark in your books. To do that, it needs a photo of the page, your account, and a few details about how the app is working. This page says exactly what we collect, why, who helps us run Xcerpt, and how to delete it all.
The short version
- We use your page photos only to find the passage you marked and keep it for you.
- We don't sell your data, show ads, or use third-party analytics or advertising trackers.
- You can delete your account and everything in it, in the app, at any time.
Xcerpt is made by Ujjwal Bhatt, an independent developer in India. "We" and "us" below mean Xcerpt. Questions about this policy: developer@xcerptapp.com.
What we collect
Your account
- Your email address, to sign you in.
- Your name: what you type in the app, or the name on your Google account if you sign in with Google. The app greets you by it.
- If you sign in with Google, Google tells us your email address and name. We don't get your Google password, contacts, or anything else from your Google account.
Your pages and passages
- The photo of the page you capture, reduced in size on your phone before it's sent.
- The words read from that photo and their positions on the page, which let you adjust a passage in the app.
- The passages you save, the book's title and author, and the book cover we find for it.
- Anything you type: corrections to a passage, a book's title, feedback you send us.
How the app is working
- For each capture: how long each step took, which corrections you made before saving, and whether you saved or took the photo again. This is how we find out whether Xcerpt reads marks correctly and quickly.
- The app version, and your phone's brand, model and Android version.
- Errors when a capture fails, sometimes sent later if you were offline.
We don't collect your location, your contacts, your other photos, or any data from other apps. The app uses the camera only while you're capturing a page.
How we use it
- To find the passage you marked on a page, identify the book, and keep both in your library.
- To sign you in, and to email you the code when you sign in with your email.
- To improve how accurately and quickly Xcerpt reads marked passages.
- To answer you when you write to us.
We don't sell your data, rent it, or use it for advertising.
Who helps us run Xcerpt
A few services do parts of the work for us. Each gets only what its part needs:
| Service | What it does | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Google Cloud Vision | Reads the words on the page | The page photo |
| OpenAI | Finds which words you marked, and the book's title and author | The page photo and the words read from it |
| Supabase | Stores your account, library and page photos; handles sign-in | Everything listed above |
| Vercel | Runs Xcerpt's server | The requests the app makes |
| "Continue with Google" sign-in | Your sign-in, if you use Google | |
| Resend | Sends the sign-in code email | Your email address |
| Google Books, Open Library | Find a book's cover | The book's title and author only |
Google Cloud Vision and OpenAI process the page photo to return a result to us. Under their terms for API customers, they don't use it to train their models. Some of these services are run outside India, so your data may be processed in other countries. We store your library with Supabase in India (Mumbai).
How long we keep it
- Your library (passages, books, and the page photos they came from) is kept for as long as you have an account, so you can come back to it and see the page a passage came from.
- A passage you delete disappears from your library at once. The capture it came from stays with your account until you delete the account.
- Everything is deleted when you delete your account. See below.
Deleting your account
In the app: Account → Delete account. This deletes your account, all your passages and books, your page photos, and your sign-in at once, and it can't be undone. Without the app, see how to delete your account.
Your choices and rights
- You can see and edit your library in the app, and delete any passage.
- You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete it, by writing to developer@xcerptapp.com from the email address of your account. We reply within 30 days.
Keeping it safe
Everything between the app and our server travels encrypted (HTTPS), and our storage provider encrypts data on disk. Your library can only be reached through Xcerpt's server, which checks that each request is really from you. Nobody can see another reader's passages, even with a link.
Children
Xcerpt isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has an account, write to us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change what we collect or how we use it, we'll update this page and its date. For important changes, we'll tell you in the app.
